Google redesigns the Android brand for the first time since 2014
Streamlined wordmark and new shades are accompanied by body-free robot top across the brand.
Google has just unveiled the latest version of the Android brand, commemorating the third official design under its tutelage and the first modification since 2014. The brand-new branding modifies the appear of the “Android” wordmark, incorporates a brand-new palette of accessible dyes, and officially kills off the full “bugdroid” robot in favor of incorporating just its president into the official logo.
At first glance, the rebrand inspects slight; and well, it is. But that doesn’t mean it’s lacking reputed. And there’s quite a bit more here than you are able to first notice.
You’ll no longer read the “Android” wordmark without the robot ability somewhere adjacent.
Here’s the short-lived explanation: the “android” wordmark has thinned out, included serifs and selectively rounded some recess. It’s still lower-case, and greatly similar to the last redesign from 2014. More evolution than rebellion, but it’s unquestionably a change.
More importantly, Google has made a permanent addition to the wordmark: the Android name will now ever be accompanied by the bugdroid robot intelligence. You’ll no longer assure the wordmark without the pate somewhere neighboring, be it directly to the right( as indicated above ), immediately above( is an indication) or somewhere in the viscinity if put in a larger branding context.
And that’s substantial, because the head is the only part of the robot that remains. Yes, the robot’s body is gone for good.
Now that the robot is going to show up everywhere as a permanent fixture of the Android brand, it’s been reduced to precisely a head to set more seamlessly in a logo situation. In the process, the heading received tweaks to its bow radius, as well as heart and feeler placements, which are then matched in the curves and placement of the “android” notes beside it. Together, it works well and may seem like a cohesive unit.
Because the body is now gone, Google is fixing the Android head more expressive and anthropomorphic. Much like we witnessed with the last couple Android secretes, you’ll likely ensure the Android head with attentions and antennas in different positions to evoke different feelings. Google intends to be extra spirited with the robot premier to compensate for no longer having the whole body to move around. When I met with members of Google’s design team prior to the announcement they established various impressions they were working on to bring the robot head to even more targets both digitally, in branding and market, and physically, such as in all regions of the Google campus.
The canonical version of the new Android logo has symbols in black( or lily-white for distinguish) and robot top in dark-green, but Google is expanding the brand’s prospects with a new pigment palette that can be applied to both parts. The entire palette is located in all regions of the brand-new “Android green, ” which as you can see is a bit more subdued with less yellowed in it. Sitting alongside the brand-new dark-green is a secondary off-color and navy, as well as tertiary orange, chartreuse and light blue.
The new colour palette applies the brand flexible to fit more appropriately in many different scenarios.
Google will provide collaborators with the guiding principles on how it expressed the hope that the colours laid out in terms of their amounts and combinations, but in general companionships will be free to use them in whichever ways they’d like. The give of six complexions( plus black and white, of course) are designed to work together no matter the combining or layout.
The dyes are obviously awfully complementary, while also providing plenty of differentiate between any two when you situated them side-by-side. The palette is earthy overall, and to my gazes derives lots of inspiration from the emblazons spend on recent hardware concoctions from Google. At a gaze I immediately assure the Pixel Slate in the fleet hue, and the Home Mini in the orange. The remain of the hues would equip right in with Google’s current lineup of Pixel phones.
The overall Android rebrand too comes alongside Google’s decision to drop the “tasty treats” naming scheme from Android editions starting with the Android 10 release.
I don’t consideration Google was ever going to make a spectacular change to the Android brand at this pitch, with roughly 2.5 billion active Android maneuvers found in every corner of the world. But these changes are significant when you consider just how gigantic Android is. Moving to a brand-new dye palette, and killing off the robot form in favor of incorporating its honcho in the motto, do have a significant impact on how the label represents itself and is perceived.
